Yubi and Double Yubi Purslanes
A number of the flowering purslanes are available. Some of the best known ones are the Yubi Summer Joy series and the Double Yubi series.
Yubi Summer Joy Series
The Yubi Summer Joy plants are virtually carefree, requiring little attention. They thrive in heat and high humidity. These plants are excellent for flower beds as well as hanging baskets and other containers. These can be grown from seed.
The Yubi Summer Joys have gorgeous single blossoms that are nearly three inches across. Unlike most moss rose flowers, these remain open well in the evening.
The series features twelve different colors. The pastel ones in this group include Yubi Summer Joy White as well as Yubi Summer Joy Light Pink. Summer Joy Apricot petals have a bicolored effect with light apricot interspersed with a darker blush. Summer Joy Primrose is a very pastel yellow.
Summer Joy Yellow is a true egg yolk color. This was named a Texas Superstar plant. So, you know it can take adverse growing conditions.
Yubi Deep Yellow purslane was among the best performing varieties during container trials at Ohio State University.
Summer Joy Pink is a lovely medium pink, too deeply colored to be considered a true pastel. Summer Joy Orange is very deep peach rather than a shocking hot orange.
The Summer Joy series includes a number of red shades. Summer Joy Scarlet has bright yellow centers. Summer Joy Deep Rose is a rich purplish-red, while Wine Red is slightly lighter colored. There are several other reds, including Summer Joy Rose, and Summer Joy Rose with Red Eye.
Double Yubi Purslanes
In addition to the Summer Joy series, there is also a Double Yubi purslane series. If you want knock-out flowers, the Double Yubi varieties are the ones. These are so fully double you can’t even see the centers of the flowers. Over the summer as the temperatures get higher and higher, the blossoms actually become larger.
Double Yubi plants are very lush and robust. They feature trailing stems. Some of these have particularly colorful stems and/or foliage as well, particularly Double Yubi Sunset Red.
With the Double Yubi you have a good choice of colors. Double Yubi Sunset Red is a pure scarlet. Other shades include Double Yubi Rose, Lemon Yellow, and Pink. Double Yubi Gold is a lovely bicolor with yellow and gold petals.
Double Yubi Purple and Yellow is a flamboyant bicolor. Flat yellow petals surround a sorbet-like center with beautifully ruffled inner petals in contrasting tones of purple and yellowish-orange.
