Inexpensive Bedroom Makeover

Inexpensive Bedroom Makeover
You spend at least a third of your life in the bedroom. Sure, you’re asleep most of that time, but your bedroom is still the last place you see before falling asleep, and the first place to hit your eyes when they open in the morning. It’s hard to feel relaxed enough to drift off to peaceful sleep at night, or start the morning feeling capable and assured in a room filled with clutter, decorated with old, ugly castoffs or focused on faded, dingy bedding.

You might think a bedroom makeover is way out of your reach, but you’d be surprised at how much you can do without breaking the budget. So why not fill your bedroom with décor you love? Each of the following ideas costs $100 or less; and each makes a big impact. Use one idea, or all of them, and feel the difference an updated bedroom makes on your mood.

Remake your bed: The bed is the focal point of most bedrooms, so a change in bedding has a big impact. While it’s true that designer bedding can be pricey, you can find lovely comforters, quilts, duvet covers and bedspreads at HomeGoods, Target or Walmart. If you already like your comforter, spring for a new set of sheets. You can easily find a quality, comfortable set for less than $100.

Add a few cozy touches: No need for elaborate, fussy shams. A set of pretty pillowcases is less expensive, and adds the same splash of color to your bed. Box springs are ugly, so hide them away with a bed skirt. A bed skirt also hides under-bed storage. If you want a final dash of color or pattern, lay a folded throw blanket along the foot of the bed.

Change the knobs: You’d be surprised at what a difference new knobs or drawer pulls make. Jazz up your dresser, nightstand and cabinet with new accessories. Check out Target, The Home Depot, Lowe’s or other home improvement centers for a big selection of hardware. If you’re looking for something extra-special, look for hand painted or unusual knobs on Etsy or similar crafts sites.

Replace a lampshade: Boring white lampshades are just that, boring. Instead, style your lamp with a colorful or intriguingly patterned shade. Target carries some wonderful lampshades; or if you’re feeling crafty, give a white lampshade your own makeover with paint .

Warm up the floor: A small area rug at the foot of your bed or along the side where your feet first hit the floor not only adds color and interest, it helps muffle sound in the room and protects your feet from an unwelcome jolt of cold on those chilly winter mornings.

Hang Artwork: Instead of multiple small pieces on the wall, choose one piece large enough to make a major impact on the space over the headboard. Whether you hang a quilt, a poster or a large painting, pick something strong enough to be the first thing you notice when entering the room.

Do Something Fun: Add a little touch of whimsy to your bedroom. Hang a Chinese paper lantern from the ceiling. String white twinkle lights along the curtain rod. Pick one piece of furniture to paint a super-bright color or cover with decoupage. Hang netting from the ceiling over your bed to create the illusion of draperies around the bed’s head.
