After getting a gift of some wonderful bento supplies including onigiri molds, I decided I needed to make some brick stitched onigiri earrings. Onigiri are tasty rice balls. The black strip on the earring pattern represents the nori strip used to hold it while you eat it.

Because a lot of people think of fish when they think of sushi, I decided to make fish for the "fringe", which led to much merriment as my daughter and I tried to say "Brick stitched fish fringe" 3 times fast.

I use a short grain rice because it's stickier then long grain, and a little extra water to make them. I also don't use traditional fillings. I make them frequently with leftovers that have a lot of flavor. Turkey burgers are a family favorite. If you have a kid who is anti-nori like my youngest is, try the soy wrappers. You can find a great selection of onigiri molds at JBox.com. I've got some nice big triangle molds from them.
The most traditional and the kind used in a lot of anime are the triangle shaped onigiri.
