Season Summary 07 – 08 - EPL UEFA FIFA
United they stand, victorious again.
When Manchester United lifted the Champions League trophy in Moscow last Wednesday, it signalled the end of the soccer season in Europe. United won on penalties against Chelsea, after the match had produced a 1-1 draw after extra time. John Terry was the villain of the piece, slipping to miss a penalty when Chelsea had the advantage.
So veteran manager Alex Ferguson has once again achieved a double, as he added the trophy to his numerous collection along with the Premier League title, winning the race that the Red Devils had emerged as victors in just a week earlier.
Portsmouth meanwhile became the first team from outside of the top 4 to win the FA Cup in over 10 years when they beat Championship side Cardiff City at Wembley. The people of the British Naval City celebrated for days!
Rangers' ruined Quad dream, St Petersburg's Zenith.
Rangers were to see their dreams of a historic quadruple crumble away in the final in Manchester. They had hoped to add to their Scottish League Cup Trophy, and were in strong contention for also the Scottish Cup, and the Premier League title towards the end of the season.
It was not to be as it turned out as Zenit St Petersburg beat Rangers 2-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium, England. Rangers had held the favourites to a 0-0 draw for most of the match, but 18 minutes from full time, when Denisov found Arshavin, then followed through on a neat one – two, you just knew .... that he would put it past Alexander and into the net.
He obliged, and Zirianov took the matter beyond doubt with virtually the last kick to complete the victory. It was enough to give FC Zenit St. Petersburg their first ever European title, Russia's second European trophy in four years. Celebrations in the streets of Russia's “Northern Capital” were the order of the day.
Rangers were also to be disappointed in the Scottish League as Celtic took the title on the last day of the season...
1.FFC Frankfurt win the UEFA Women's Cup for an historic 3rd time.
Frankfurt beat Umeå IK 3-2 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate to win the UEFA Cup, with goals from Pohlers on 7 minutes, Wimbersky on 71, Dahlqvist scored from the penalty spot and Östberg 83 scored a consolation for the Swedish side. It was a record crowd of 27,640 that watched the German side win the trophy.
Tottenham Hotspur won the Carling Cup.
Earlier in the season Spurs beat Arsenal in a thrilling final to win the Carling Cup at Wembley Stadium.
All Change in The Premiership
Birmingham, Reading and Derby were relegated from the Premiership. They will be replaced from the promoted teams from the Championship. West Bromwich Albion won the Championship and qualified for promotion to the Premiership automatically, as did Stoke City who were runners – up in that league.
The play off's to determine the third and final spot was between Bristol City and Hull at Wembley. The promotion spot went to Hull City, who won 1-0 on the day thanks to a fantastic volleyed goal from Dean Windass after 38 minutes.
The Tigers (Hull) have reached the top flight of English football for the first time in their 104 year history. Amazing for a City of such size, they had been the largest city in Europe to have not reached the top flight up until then. Congratulations to Hull.
FIFA Blatter's Law Controversy
Meanwhile today, FIFA - the world football governing body has voted in favour of the 'six-plus-five rule', which would put a limit on the number of foreign players. FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said he hopes the rule will be ratified by the 2012/13 season.
The unpopular FIFA boss seems to disapprove of the Premier League's dominance in this season's Champions League and cited that as an example of why his organisation must implement the contraversial idea, despite Spain and Italy dominating it in the past and despite legal concerns from the European Union.
This one is going to be a big debate.
