Lucas and Sami met when he was still in military school and Sami was in high school. Lucas had a crush on Sami’s older sister Carrie while Sami had a crush on Lucas’ older brother Austin. One night Lucas saw who he thought was a sleeping Carrie and they made love. It wasn’t until later that he discovered it wasn’t Carrie he was with, it was Sami. Sami in turn drugged Austin and had sex with him. Eventually Sami ran away and left Salem.

Austin and Carrie eventually fell in love and were getting married when Sami showed up and stopped the wedding by fainting. She then revealed that she was pregnant and Austin was the father. Carrie was devastated and called off the wedding.

Sami gave birth to a little boy she named Will. When Will was about 2 years old it came out that Lucas not Austin was his father. Lucas wanted to spend time with his son but had a deep resentment for Sami which was fueled by his mother Kate. Sami, wanting to keep Lucas and Kate from her son accused Lucas of hitting Will. The investigation and battle for visitation caused Lucas to go over the edge and start drinking.

Sami later met and was planning to marry Franco Kelly. Little did she know that Franco had been hired by Kate to keep Sami away from Lucas. On Sami and Franco’s wedding day Lucas came in drunk and saw Franco threatening Kate. Lucas, defending his mother, hit Franco with a fireplace poker and killed him. Sami came in and passed out so Kate arranged the scene so it looked like Sami killed Franco. When Sami woke up she didn’t remember anything and she was arrested. Sami was sentenced to death and as she was being injected Lucas confessed. His confession came too late as Kate had paid a dying patient at the hospital to make a death bed confession.

Still trying to get full custody of Will Kate and Lucas tried to make Sami think she was going nuts. They had a doll dressed like Will and a tape of a child’s cries and would use them to torment Sami. Their plan almost worked when Sami, thinking she was saving Will fell over a cliff. To Kate’s dismay, Sami survived by landing on a ledge below.

Eventually Sami and Lucas realized they belonged together and planned to get married. Kate was not thrilled with the prospect of Sami as a daughter-in-law and did her best to keep them apart.

Sami and Lucas had planned to get married several times before finally becoming Mr. and Mrs. Horton. The first time Kate set Sami up and made it look like she slept with Brandon Walker. Kate drugged Sami and Brandon and got them into a hotel room together. She then arranged to have Lucas find them. Lucas believing his mother over Sami called off the wedding.

The second time they were to get married Sami actually made it down the aisle. Kate came in dressed in the clothes Sami used when she was pretending to be Stan. Kate exposed Sami’s secret that she was Stan and Lucas walked out on her.

The third time they planned a wedding Kate and EJ were working against it. Sami and Lucas made it to the alter and were pronounced man and wife. At the reception they were watching a slide show that was made of the two of them but EJ snuck in a police photo of Sami and him in a car on the day of Lucas’ accident. Everyone was shocked but Kate was thrilled. To Kate’s dismay, Lucas forgave Sami and they left the reception together but not before Lucas fed Kate a face full of wedding cake.
