Imagine a life in gay utopia. You have a wonderful partner. You are both successful. You have a glorious home in Beverly Hills complete with immaculately landscaped lawns, a Jacuzzi, and a pool. You are living the high life with dinner parties galore. You are in a social circle many dream to only glance. You are living it up. But. Yep, there’s a but. You are feeling something is missing. There is a piece of you that is yearning for something you cannot understand. You have everything you have ever wanted or needed, so why is this lingering doubt or sense of something’s missing messing around?

The answer… KIDS!

Yes, you read right. What happens when a well-to-do gay couple decides that they have everything they have ever wanted or needed in life except the “American dream.” You remember that, right. It’s that “dream” we all in the United States of America grow up with. You know what I am talking about. The house. The white picket fence. The dog in the yard. Mom and dad standing hand in hand with Billy and Jane right next to them. Oh right, you’re gay. So to rephrase, Dad and Dad standing next to each other. You know what I mean. It’s that time in your gay mid-life where you want nothing more than to spread the wealth. No, I am not talking about all the white parties, blue parties, circuit parties. I am talking about the internal animalistic need to sow your seed and produce off-spring so that you can leave your own Legacy, sans Bush of course.

Enter Phil (a gay couples counselor) and Eric (a successful lawyer). They want a baby and plan to adopt. In the mean time, they decide to get their foster license just in case. Enter the “just one night” foster kids, Brian and T.J. Brothers with a drugged out and drunk mother who need a home because their Case Worker Gloria once again finds them and removes them from the home. You think it’s a simple case of “oh, you have some kids to take care of, good luck” don’t you. Well life isn’t fair, is it? Rarely, if ever!

This film, Get Your Stuff, takes a light-hearted look into the ups and downs of gay life and children, and what happens when you mix both of them and throw in a birthmother and new grandmother. The aim is to entertain as well as enlighten, and this movie does just that. While not a mainstream movie, this one isn’t your typical gay B-movie either. There are well acted roles, and some not so well acted ones. The main characters radiate off the screen and the children capture your heart, and your funny bones.

Released in 2000, this movie stars Grady Hunt (T.J.), Anthony Meindl (Eric), Cameron Watson (Phil), Blayn Barbosa (Brian), and Kimberly Scott (Gloria). The movie is directed and written by Max Mitchell, features original music scores by Barry Coffing, and runs 93 minutes.

If you are in the mood for a good laugh with a bit of gay drama thrown in, Get Your Stuff is the movie for you.
