Famous (and Not so Famous) Atheists
To discover that Douglas Adams, Gene Roddenbury, and Issac Asimov were atheists was not surprising.
But did you know that Charlie Chaplin and Bruce Lee were atheists? I was amazed to discover this and just as amazed to discover that Hugh Laurie, Daniel Radcliffe, Richard Burton, Charles Shultz, Gene Kelly (agnostic), Ernest Hemingway, and W.C. Fields all considered themselves to be secular to some degree. How about Keanu Reeves, Daniel Day-Lewis (agnostic), Julianne Moore, Warren Buffet, or Mark Zuckerburg? How about Andrew Carnegie, who stated that "not only had I got rid of the theology and the supernatural, but I had found the truth of evolution."
Even William Shatner shares his skepticism in an interview in 1968. https://www.memory-prime.de/trekworlds/tvpicturelife1968_shatner.pdf
There are many more than I ever would have guessed. Considering the current religious and political climate, I’m amazed that a lot of atheist celebrities share what they believe.
It would seem we are in good company and I find it comforting that these celebrities would share how they believe.
Katharine Hepburn once said, “I’m an atheist, and that’s it. I believe there’s nothing we can know except that we should be kind to each other and do what we can for people.”
Well said Ms. Hepburn.
*I have researched the names mentioned above to the best of my ability to be sure that their doubt and/or denial of a supreme being is correct. There are some well-known people who many have claimed are non-theist but upon further investigation it seems there is enough doubt about that claim that I did not discuss them here.
