With a mixture of creations including stomp-and-clap acoustic rock, classic pop and front-porch folk, The Lumineers are a band like no other. By producing simple and sincere music that’s made up of heartfelt lyrics, The Lumineers have the ability to wow crowds of all ages with their original folk rock rhythms.

After deciding to leave their hometown of New York, front man Wesley Schultz (vocals, guitar and piano) and Jeremiah (drums) packed up and headed for Denver, Colorado in order to get away from the big city’s high prices and cutthroat music scene. It was in Denver that they met their third member, Neyla Pekarek (cello, mandolin, vox and piano) through an ad on Craigslist and the trio hasn’t looked back since.

Officially founded in 2009, The Lumineers has been influenced by fellow musicians and bands such as Talking Heads, Bob Dylan, Bright Eyes, Ryan Adams, Tom Petty, Kings of Leon, Leonard Cohen, Fleetwood Mac and Radiohead. However their music sounds like a blend of Americana-inspired sounds of The Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons, as well as the slow, raw and sultry ballads of Jeff Buckley and Ryan Adams.

As winners of the “Best Surrounding Area Band” in the 2009 HMA’s (Hoboken Music Awards), The Lumineers released a self-recorded EP in 2011. This release led to a self-booked tour and after attracting many fans from all over the US, they were signed by Dualtone Records who they were able to record their first full-length album through. This self-titled debut album was released on April 3, 2012.

As an avid folk music fan, I can honestly say that The Lumineers are at the top of my playlist. After first hearing them a few weeks ago, I have not been able to stop listening. With their rustic, relatable music that has undeniable classic folk sounds, they have managed to stay original and even seem to dip into uncharted territory with their timeless melodies, musical wisdom and soul-stirring lyrics.

I look forward to hearing more from this interesting folk rock band, and I can only hope they decide to make a trip to Eastern Canada to play a show.
