Applicants must be planning to receive their Eagle rank before June 30, 2008. Applications are due by March 1, 2008. Applications may be for completed projects or for planned projects. Winners will be announced by April 1, 2008 and they will receive their award at a reception hosted by THCC.

Prior to submission for review by the Scholarship committee, the project must be approved by the District Advancement Chairman. A copy of Page 3 of the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, fully executed, bearing all of the required signatures must accompany the Scholarship Application. Submitting a project that has not been approved could result in the disqualification of the project for consideration.

*Income and expenses related to the scholarship are to be documented in the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook. At the election of the candidate, all of the scholarship funds or any surplus of the scholarship funds in excess of that amount necessary to complete his project will only be made payable to the College or University of recipient’s choosing. The recipient shall not retain any surplus for personal use, other than the furtherance of his education.


THCC has offered to provide a scholarship for Scouts working on an Eagle project that is designed to benefit a recipient or recipients who are aged or disabled. The recipient could be a nursing home, hospital, retirement facility or another group that also meets all of the guidelines for an Eagle project. Preferential consideration, however, will be given to those applications for projects benefiting individuals who are institutionalized. Recognizing that Eagle Projects may not be approved if they solely benefit “for-profit” organizations or an individual, the project must clearly demonstrate its direct benefit to a segment of the frail, elderly or disabled population.

The fact that the physical location of the project is on the premises of a "for-profit" institution does not negate the qualifying fact that "the group" benefiting from the project is the aged/disabled patients/residents. Three Eagle Projects that could be done on a for-profit site and still benefit the residents could be a Senior Olympics, a Country-Western Hoe Down or an Easter-Passover Celebration. A project that would exclusively benefit a for-profit group can never be considered. The key question is who DIRECTLY benefits.

A committee composed of a representative for the Sponsor, a person from the Scouting community, and one or more representatives from the community will review projects. The initial scholarship will be offered to Scouts in the Longhorn Council. Additional scholarships will be offered in the future and may include other Councils in Texas.
