Scary, Scary Halloween - Book Review

Scary, Scary Halloween - Book Review
Eyes in the dark follow a mummy, ghost, devil and werewolf moving in the night. The eyes’ owners are afraid of the figures passing in front of them. They move farther from the walkway to place more distance between them. It is Halloween. The eyes watch a ghost float. Halloween is the scariest night of the year.

Eve Bunting’s text is rhyming verse. It deliciously describes each monster as it passes before the eyes. To what or whom do the eyes belong? The rhymes are simple and perfect for five-year-old children and younger.

Scary, Scary Halloween is spooky, but not frightening. There is nothing for a parent or teacher to worry. At the book’s end, children discover the eyes belong to cats. In fact, the monsters are really human children trick-or-treating.

Jan Brett’s illustrations are bright and clear. Look at the bright, orange pods on the Scary, Scary Halloween book cover. Children are able to identify each monster on the pages. There is a fall scenery backdrop to the monsters.

Scary, Scary Halloween is a good children book of poetry. The rhyming verse is perfect for the Halloween season. Children love the rhythm of the words. They will want to repeatedly read or hear it.

Eve Bunting’s book has forty pages. Scary, Scary Halloween is available in the hardback and paperback formats. Happy Halloween!
