Touring Motorcycles
The touring style of motorcycle is the top of the line for most manufacturers. Touring is a lifestyle that encompasses the best of all worlds. The motorcycle is equipped with a larger engine, more comfortable seats, ample room to stow gear and all the bells and whistles. There are many types of touring motorcycles but this article focuses on the premium deluxe touring motorcycle that is made strictly for comfort, luxury, and long distance riding.
The premium touring motorcycle has been affectionately called a "road couch", a "geyser glide", and the "master of the highway". The "road couch" title aptly describes the incredible comfort and luxury ride. The "geyser glide" connotation comes from bikers who prefer the basics rather than all the bells and whistles. Also, it has been rumored that you have to be older and established to afford a premium touring motorcycle. Premium touring motorcycles do tend to be the more expensive choices. The "master of the highway" describes the incredible feeling you get when you are cruising down the highway in luxury and comfort on a beautiful smooth riding machine.
On the premium touring motorcycle, the rider sits in a straight-up manner with their feet directly beneath them or slightly forward. The handlebars are positioned comfortably so that the rider doesn't have to stretch or strain the back or neck. The premium touring motorcycles offer standard equipment such as heated seats and grips, ABS braking, extra cushioned seats, surround sound cd systems, cruise control, windshields, saddlebags (hard), tourpaks, and many other extras. Typically premium touring motorcycles are heavier and not as easy to navigate at slower speeds and in tight spaces, unless you practice, practice, practice.
The premium touring motorcycle is the ultimate in comfort and luxury. Because it is heavier, more expensive, has more chrome, and harder to successfully handle, this would not be the choice for a first motorcycle. Many police departments use this style of motorcycle and are so proud of their skill in handling the larger, heavier motorcycles, they even have rodeos to display their skills. This style of motorcycle is usually purchased by long-time experienced riders.
Some examples of this style of premium touring motorcycle are:
-Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide; Classic Electra Glide
-BMW R1200 RT; R1200 RT-P
-Yamaha Royal Star Venture; Tour Deluxe
-Victory Vision Tour Premium; Tour Comfort
-Honda GoldWing
There are other styles of touring motorcycles not mentioned in this article that offer great rides as well, but without the extreme comforts of home.
Until next week, ride free and safe.
