ABC Daytime Emmy Nominations
The Daytime Emmy nominations were announced last week and unfortunately for ABC, their soap operas didn’t garner many acting nominations. Overall, the CBS dramas led the way with 51 nominations compared to only 27 for the ABC shows and 10 for NBC.
Here is a list of the main categories and the nominations for the ABC soaps:
OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
David Canary, as Adam & Stuart Chandler "All My Children" – ABC
Anthony Geary, as Luke Spencer "General Hospital" – ABC
OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
Brian Kerwin, as Charlie Banks "One Life to Live" – ABC
OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
"General Hospital" – ABC
"One Life to Live" – ABC
David Canary has starred on All My Children since 1983 and plays the roles of brothers, Adam and Stuart Chandler. Canary, a veteran of movies, television and soap operas, may be best known for his role as Candy on the classic television show “Bonanza”. Canary’s role of Adam is always involved in the major storylines, usually involving J.R., Tad, and Krystal. He has won the emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor five times.
Anthony Geary, who plays Luke Spencer, has starred on General Hospital on and off since 1978. He’s best known as one half of the famous supercouple, Luke and Laura. Geary’s storyline this year included Luke suffereing from a heart attack and dealing with his own lifestyle and mortality issues. Geary has won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor a total of five times.
Brian Kerwin, a veteran actor of television, Broadway, and movies is a newcomer to One Life to Live, but had appeared on The Young and the Restless back in 1976. He plays Charlie, a recovering alcoholic, who befriends and romances Vicki Lord. This is Kerwin’s first daytime emmy nomination.
One Life to Live had a strong storyline this year with the passing of the patriarch of the Buchanan family, Asa Buchanan. This was an emotional story that dealt with many of the show’s characters and how they were affected by his death.
General Hospital’s shining moment for the year was the Metro Court hostage storyline. This story introduced the nefarious Mr. Craig (now Jerry Jacks) to the audience and showcased the strength of their actors working as an ensemble. The utilization of telling the story via real time and from the ending back to the begininng was very effective and rivoting.
