Quick Ideas for Activity Days

Guest Author - Terrie Lynn Bittner

Following are some ideas for easy to plan Faith in God/Activity Day Meetings:

1. Gardening. Purchase flower pots at a dollar store and provide either seeds or plants. Let the girls do their planting outside. If pots and plants remain, ask the girls to plant them and give them to other adults or children who are in the building that night. Talk about provident living and how growing herbs or veggies can help cut food costs and help us to eat well. Many herbs can be grown indoors if your children live in apartments.

2. Bake bread on a Saturday. While it rises, have a Super Saturday on a smaller scale than your stake might have. Teach the girls to knit or crochet, play article of faith games and fill one or two smaller requirements. Have the girls bring lunch. Have the girls donate the bread for Sacrament Meeting, and take small loaves home for themselves.

3. Make Sunday boxes after discussing how to keep the Sabbath Day holy. Search the Friend for puzzles and games. This is particularly valuable if you have many new converts, whose families may not have the resources for Sabbath activities.

4. Have the girls make jewelry—one piece for themselves, on to give a friend. During the lesson portion, discuss what real friendship is and isn’t, how to choose friends, and how to be friends with people who are different from you. Continue the discussion more casually during the craft.

5. Invite women who are in college or graduates to tell the girls what college is all about and how to prepare now. Make something they can use now to prepare—a homework chart, for example.

6. Learn to sew simple cloth bags to carry scriptures in.

7. Teach them to read and lead music and how to teach a song. Let them teach a song to the Senior Primary children who didn’t attend.

8. Meet with the young women in the Young Women’s room. Have the older girls teach the younger ones what Young Women’ is all about and then do an activity together that passes off a requirement for both groups. Even though only the 11 year olds have to do this, the littler girls love it as well, and the older girls can be encouraged to serve as role models and mentors for the younger girls.

9. In December, make a simple nativity set the girls can display in their homes or give as gifts.

10. Write letters to Activity Day girls in another ward. After they’ve exchanged a few letters, have a joint activity.
