Phil Mickleson wins the Players
It seems that this was the tournament for Phil Mickelson to take as Tiger was long out of it and seemed to only find his game on the last day. Phil stayed strong and played well all four days until he won by two-strokes at The Players Championship tournament. It was Phil’s 31st win of his PGA career on Mothers day weekend at TOC Sawgrass golf course at Ponte Verda Beach, Florida. It seemed he was covered with Callaway items from his clubs, clothes, shoes, with his game using Callaway Golf technology with Bruce Harmon his golf instructor. I saw this on the internet this morning as I requested news from Callaway about special events and of interest to Callaway..
It was interesting for me to read that Phil used the new FT-5 driver, X Hybrids, S forged irons and of course the HX golf balls. Why this interested me is that I use the Callaway Big Bertha golf clubs including three of the new Hybrid clubs. I found when I purchased the Big Bertha Hybrid #3 that it felt so good my son gave me the #5 for Christmas. I then ordered the Big Bertha Hybrid #7 and now am considering the #9. I love the way they feel and seem much easier to control than the irons plus they seem to go straighter and longer. No complaint about that in my book.
Phil only missed a few fairways and was right on when approaching the greens and he kept his cool to finish strong. No more making wild swings like what happened when he was leading in a tournament last year. That was hard to watch, so this year with the help of Butch Harmon his coach making a few swing changes Phil is playing much better.
It also was hard to watch as his competitor Sean O’Hair when he dumped two in the water on the island hole #17. Phil was just two up on Sean before this happened and one can feel so sorry for Sean as his score of 7 on that par 3 hole was a disaster.
After Phil’s win as he was walking up to the club house, Butch Harmon met him and with arms around each other they continued on for the presentation of the trophy. If Mickelson can continue to play at this pace he will be one to watch as he says that if he continues to work on this progression of swing change he should be a tough competitor. He says he is looking forward to the U. S. Open next month.
