If you’re not familiar with BabyFirst TV, you should check it out. It’s an entire channel of educational programming dedicated to babies and toddlers, and most often found as a premium channel on most cable/satellite systems. The shows are cute and very appropriate, and cover a range of topics, from music and art to counting and letter recognition.

BabyFirst TV has more than 80 programs in seven different learning areas to keep children entertained. Each program is engaging but very brief, as it is designed to keep the attention of little ones with very short attention spans. It’s easy to tell which learning area is the current focus, because their flower logo- found in the corner of your TV screen- changes color according to the topic focus. The seven areas of viewing are: “thinking journey”, “language playground”, “imagination lane”, “feelings garden”, “numbers parade”, “sensory wonderland”, and “rainbow dreams”.

Thinking Journey
Shows under this heading focus on helping children to think in specific ways and learn new ways to view the world around them. Most of the shows, such as “Fred and Fiona” and “Bonnie Bear”, feature variations of the “hide and seek” game. Children are lead through the process of figuring out where the hidden item is (or what the hidden item is) through the narration of the characters.

Language Playground
These shows introduce children to various forms of language, as well as various languages. Learn new words with “VocabuLarry”, the talking parrot who learns new words, or learn sign language with the “I Can Sign” segment, which teaches children how to sign by repetitive sign demonstration along with a visual display of the action being signed.

Imagination Lane
Music and art are the focus of this segment. “The Notekins” (one of my personal favorites- they are so cute!) features little people as each of the musical notes. Each episode, they learn about the effect of playing notes in different ways (fast, slow, loud, and soft) on their way to visit a musical instrument friend. “Li’l Vinnie’s Art” introduces children to the artwork of classical masters.

Feelings Garden
The shows in this segment focus on teaching children social skills. Watch real babies interact and play together on the segment called “Babies”, or watch “Tec the Tractor” as he learns how to interact with people, animals, and equipment on the farm in various situations.

Numbers Parade
As the title suggest, this section deals with numbers and counting. Watch “Widget and his Wonder Machine” teach children how to count objects, or work with a virtual puzzle in the segment “Shapes and Sizes”.


Sensory Wonderland
This area deals with the five senses and how kids use their senses to interpret the world around them. In “My Gym at Home”, you’ll work with your child to practice large motor skills together. “Peek-a-boo, I See You” is exactly what it sounds like- a game of peek-a-boo with the character host.

Rainbow Dreams
In Rainbow Dreams we find shows that are designed to soothe kids before a nap or in the evening. Watch as a talented artist uses ordinary sand to create amazing pictures on glass in “Sandman”, or listen to gentle music while you watch colorful shapes move and change in “Color Symphony”.

Parent Involvement
All of the shows on BabyFirst TV feature captions at the bottom that explain how parents can engage their kids while watching the show. Helpful hints, tips, and suggestions make it easy for parents to assist their kids in their learning as they are entertained.
