The benefits of walking for children are many - here are some of the main ones

It’s a proven fact that babies and young children sleep better after going out for a walk whether they are being pushed in a pushchair/stroller or walking.
Help them learn pedestrian safety with adult guidance and supervision
Build up stronger family relationships as they walk with family members
To get these benefits -how far should a child walk?
As a general guide a child should be able to walk about ½ a mile per birthday.
So for example a five year old could be expected to walk up to 2½ miles and a seven year old should have no problem with walking 3½ miles.
Most children of school age should be able to walk for fifteen minutes to thirty minutes. The Department of Health in Britain recommends that secondary children take an average of around 13,000 steps per day.
Children who are beginning to be physically active should start out slowly and gradually build to higher levels. This is very important as it prevents the risk of injury or them feeling defeated/dejected from unrealistic goals.
To help them stay motivated with their walking find walks that will interest them.
Walking to school is one way to help children walk more. They could try getting off the bus one stop early or you could park your car further away from school and then walking the rest of the way – which gives their legs a bit more vital exercise each morning and afternoon.
Walk with your children
There is no point in telling your children they should walk more if you don’t.
Children follow by example and you have the chance to set an example that will allow your child to live a longer healthier life.
If you nip into the car for the shortest journeys your children will expect to be ferried around to.
You need to build walking into your life as a family for your children to gain all the benefits.
Remember that overweight children are more likely to become obese adults.
