Charges Unlikely For Kansas Abortion Provider
Thirty criminal charges against Dr. George Tiller will not be reinstated, and will most likely not be pursued due to Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline’s term ending next month.
Democrat Paul Morrison, Kansas Attorney General elect has not publicly stated that he will be ending the case, but hopes are low that he will pursue Kline’s project of the last two years.
Morrison has stated that any potential investigation will not involve Don McKinney, the Wichita attorney Kline appointed as special prosecutor. "He is extraordinarily political and, in my opinion, would absolutely not present any kind of independent perspective," Morrison said in reference to McKinney, a known anti-abortion activist.
Dr. George Tiller is known nationally for providing late-term abortions under the Kansas “mental health exception” at $5,000 per procedure. He allegedly performed numerous abortions illegally using mental health concerns for the mother as the exception to the late term abortion ban, and failed to properly report the procedures to the state.
The controversial doctor, dubbed “"Tiller the Baby Killer," has long been a target for radical activists. In 1985, his clinic was bombed, and in 1993 he was shot by a protester, Rachelle Shannon, in both arms. He also financed a major campaign aimed at Phill Kline’s ouster from Kansas government.
