The Flavor of Route 66
For the past few weeks I've been on a family vacation, a cross country road trip. While traveling on Interstate Highways 40 and 44, we occasionally took the off-ramp to some good country cooking along Route 66. Often called "The Main Street of America", the outdated highway across the USA was replaced by interstate highways in the 1970s and 1980s. Segments of this historic road still exist in, around, and between many small towns. Instead of convenience stores and fast food, travelers on Route 66 enjoy a glimpse of the past at the service stations with antique gas pumps, fascinating old photos and other memorabelia. Renovated small diners serve great food with heaping portions of old-fashioned friendly service. Here's a few classics featured in some of the dining spots along this legendary road.
