The Ambition by Lee Strobel
Mention the name, Lee Strobel, and The Case for Christ comes to mind. Strobel went on to pen additional "The Case for" volumes and other teaching books. For those not familiar with him or the popular The Case for Christ, Strobel was a self-proclaimed atheist and journalist working for the Chicago Tribune. Deciding to use his journalistic skills, he set out to debunk Christianity and the existence of Jesus as the Messiah. Remarkably, as he researched, Strobel became a believer. "The Case for" books were what resulted out of his research and experiences. His testimony can be viewed on YouTube or on the author's own website at www.leestrobel.com.
Having gone on to become a teaching pastor and successful Christian author, Strobel draws on his background to pen a fiction novel that is perfect for the suspense buff in your family. In The Ambition, Strobel's first fiction novel, he addresses themes of greed, corruption, ego, a thirst for power, and addiction, and intertwines them with matters of faith. The book centers around an attorney whose gambling addiciton forces him into corruption, a corrupt judge, an aethist reporter and a senior pastor suffering from faith issues. Their lives are all inextricably combined because of politics.
One often thinks that pastors are holy men who are free from moments of doubt. As we unload our problems onto their shoulders, we never stop to think a pastor can suffer moments of doubt or be tempted into situations because of ego. Strobel paints a realistic picture of a disillusioned pastor. He also captures the aethist perfectly in the character of Strider, the newspaper reporter.
While one's first instinct...part of human nature...is to go on a google search to see who Strobel based his characters on, he admonishes the reader not to. The characters are a creation of his mind. Maybe, or maybe not....either way, The Ambition offers suspense and an intriguing story that is intertwined with brief tidbits of Christian doctrine. Grab a copy today to enjoy by the pool or on your summer vacation!
