A couple of times during each month I will be providing more articles about the wrestlers whom I believe should be awarded the title of “Most Controversial Wrestlers”. This week’s article has three wrestlers who I feel are very controversial. This week’s inductees into my own Hall of Controversy are: Rowdy Roddy Piper, Gorgeous George, and Abdullah the Butcher.

I will start off with the person I feel is the absolute most controversial wrestler ever, bar none.

He is the Rowdy One, Rowdy Roddy Piper. I am kind of biased here because Piper has always been my favorite wrestler. I rooted for him against Hulk Hogan in the very first WrestleMania and almost got beat up for it. If Hulk Hogan was considered the epitome of the “good guy”, then Roddy Piper was definitely the antithesis of that good guy character. Roddy Piper was different from other “bad guys” as he talked a lot of smack, but always backed it up in the ring. One of his most controversial moments was when he smashed a coconut open on Jimmy Snuka’s head in a “Piper’s Pit” segment. There never was, nor will there ever be, a more controversial figure in professional wrestling.

The next wrestler whom I feel was controversial was the great “Gorgeous George”. It is my opinion that he set the standard and made it okay for male sports figures, especially male wrestlers to be flamboyant. His effeminate style of dress and mannerisms drew a lot of people to the arenas. He was the ultimate heel in wrestling then as well. With his mantra being, “Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat”, he was the man that everyone loved to hate. He dyed his hair platinum blonde and had gold plated bobby pins to hold everything together. He also handed out these bobby pins to the women at ringside as well. Gorgeous George was also the first wrestler to really use entrance music when coming to the ring as well.

My third and final controversial wrestler is Abdullah the Butcher. At 6’0” tall and weighing in at well over three hundred pounds, Abdullah is very intimidating to look at. He is probably the first wrestler to incorporate a lot of brutality and bloodshed into every one of his matches and is famous for using a fork or a pencil as a foreign object and digs them into his opponents’ foreheads. Abdullah first became the sport’s most feared heel when in a match with wrestler Gino Brito, the “Sudanese Madman” broke a wooden chair over Brito’s head and then began to pummel him into near unconsciousness with the leg of the chair.
