Along with a fresh face for 007, it appears that the producers of the upcoming James Bond flick, Casino Royale are looking for a harder edge to the theme song, as well.
Musician Chris Cornell, the singer/songwriter behind Audioslave, Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog, has collaborated with Bond composer David Arnold on an original song for the film. Cornell will also perform the song, entitled "You Know My Name," for the soundtrack.
It wasn't easy to get the legendary Seattle musician to join the roster of Bond performers, though. In an interview with VH1 this week, Cornell said when he was first approached, he thought of turning the offer down because he disliked Pierce Brosnan's portrayal of the spy in recent 007 movies.
But once producers flew him to Prague to watch some rough edits of new Bond actor Daniel Craig, Cornell had a change of heart, telling the video channel, "I was just completely blown away by it, because it's unlike any Bond film ever, really. Craig is an actor's actor, and there's emotional content to the movie. He's not like the swaggering, winking sort of super-agent guy. He's like a human being in this movie, and it's going to completely readjust the way people think of the character."
Cornell joins other distinguished performers such as Shirley Bassey, Tina Turner, Duran Duran, Sheryl Crow, Paul McCarntey & Wings and Madonna as musicians who have performed title tracks for James Bond films.
Audioslave, with Cornell, will release their new cd, Revelations, on September 5. In a recent interview with RollingStone.com, bandmate Tom Morello described the record as "Led Zeppelin meets Earth, Wind and Fire," adding that it's a "big hard rock record with a funky bottom." The first single, "Original Fire," is receiving airplay now.
Casino Royale will be released in theaters worldwide by Columbia Pictures on November 17, 2006. The soundtrack will also be released around that time.
