English equivalents: before, in front of.
Uses:
This preposition is easy to learn:
1. | We use this preposition when we refer to locations, places, physical position, etc. Let's say, we'd use it when answering a "Where" ("Dónde") question: - ¿Dónde está la casa? (Where is the house?) - La casa está ante tus ojos (The house is before your eyes) - ¿Dónde está tu hermano? (Where is brother?) - Mi hermano está ante la ventana (My brother is in front of the window) |
2. | You don't have to confuse "ante"; and "antes de", as "ante" is not used before a verb, although "antes de" also means "before". In fact, "antes de" is used with expressions of time. - Piensa en ello antes de hablar. (Think about it before talking). - Antes de hablar con ella, habla conmigo. (Before talking with her, talk with me) |
