How to Instantly Connect With Anyone - 96 All New Tricks For Big Success in Relationships by best selling author Leil Lowndes is filled with 96 useful tips and tricks on how to make relationships work. Why is this book featured on a site devoted to career training? I had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Lowndes about how her book could help people not only on a personal level, but more importantly a professional level. In her signature dynamic fashion, Ms. Lowndes shared some very important examples of how her book would be instrumental in helping people find success in the workplace.
The first tip that Ms. Lowndes shared regarded attire. Have you ever bought a new outfit to attend a business meeting or wear to a interview, only to discover on the day of the meeting that the outfit was a fashion nightmare? The chapter entitled “How to Wear Confidence When Meeting People” deals with outfitting yourself for the big day. In her book, Ms. Lowndes shares a funny story about a new outfit that she had worn to give a very important presentation. When she turned away from the audience, much to her horror, she inadvertently ended up revealing a lot more to her audience then she intended.
Though the story was extremely hilarious, it did bring an excellent tip from the author. It’s important to be completely comfortable in the clothes that you wear for an important business event. The best way to accomplish this is by wearing the outfit in a variety of situations - the grocery store, the library or any type of setting that requires a lot of natural movement. Wear the outfit until you’re comfortable, just be sure to clean it prior to the big day.
Now that you’re dressed for success, it’s time to touch upon the next inspiring tip that Ms. Lowndes shared - business cards. Do you have bad business card manners? Do you constantly dig in your pocketbook or pocket to pull out a dog-eared business card to pass out? Ms. Lowndes explained that how you handle a business card exchange says a lot about you as a business person. Ms. Lowndes spoke about the Japanese ceremonial-like exchange of business cards called meishi. When you receive a business card you should respectfully hold the card in both hands to signify respect for the giver. You should also handle your card with respect as well. Ms. Lowndes advices that our business card document is a reflection of who we are. How you handle the exchange will help the receiver to remember you as a respectable business.
With the generous amount of information in the book, you need to come up with a game plan to determine how best to tackle the information. Determine the areas in your relationships that require the most attention. Review the tips that are most applicable to your situation.
I would recommend How to Instantly Connect with Anyone to anyone seeking to improve networking connections and relationships. How did Ms. Lowndes come up with such great advice? “Simply by observations of people,” Ms. Lowndes said. “It’s all about observing life."
