Tandem

Harry Potter…witch craft….Twilight…vampires…..the culture phenomena of the modern age. People who take The Holy Bible literally and people who strictly adhere to all of the various biblical passages which warn against sorcery, divination, magic, and any attempt to become god-like have a strong distaste for these stories. Others believe there are lessons to be learned and enjoyment to be gleaned from even worldly works. The argument still ensues as to whether or not J.K. Rowling is Christian, whether or the Harry Potter series contains veiled biblical references and whether or not Stephanie Myers’ Twilight series oversteps its bounds by glorifying the giving up of one’s soul to become immortal in a fit of teen angst over a crush. Will there, indeed, can there, ever be a middle ground?

Enter Tracey Bateman, author of the recently released book, Tandem. Author of more than 30 books, Bateman blends biblical morals with mythical vampires to create a novel with likeable, well-developed characters and a story that any “vampire” fan will enjoy reading. In her book, Bateman presents typical blood thirsty vampires...albeit, in a minor role…with vampires who possess a conscience. Introducing a new twist, Bateman’s soul-conscious vampires stop drinking blood and die naturally.

Is it enough? Not being sure, I surveyed some Christian students at a local university and some staff members. For those who did not have a problem with the issue of vampires, in general, they thought the book would be an interesting read. The older staff members who quickly expressed their disapproval with the currently popular Twilight series, said they still did not believe in glorifying something that they felt was biblically wrong. They stated; however, they would prefer their children to read a vampire series with a biblical message than one centered on teenage love and tribulation.

Tandem centers around issues of family, forgiveness, love, and living one’s life for Jesus. Clear biblical truths are presented in an engaging mystery.
