Happy Adoption Day Book Review
I was thrilled beyond belief to discover the book called “Happy Adoption Day!” a few years ago. This book is a joyous celebration of adoption.
As young as age four, children start asking questions about their family. Families often turn to bookstores for age appropriate books to share with their children. It's true that bookstores have an extensive collection of titles for their young readers. However, most of these books, while perfectly fine books, don't apply to kids that were adopted in an adequate and meaningful way.
Thankfully, Happy Adoption Day does apply to kids who are were adopted, in fact, they are the center of the book! This book doesn't focus on one type of family, or one type of adoption. Instead, it celebrates all types of adoptions from all types of families.
Happy Adoption Day was written by John McCutcheon and illustrated by Julie Paschkis. It was published in 1996, and while many books on adoption can become outdated after ten years or so, Happy Adoption Day will and should be around forever.
The words flow nicely together, making it a fun and inspiring read for children and adults alike. In fact, the words are written so well, that you might find yourself singing along. That's right, singing, because the words are actually lyrics to a song!
After seeing his friend celebrate her child's adoption day, the inspiration for the song was born. Happy Adoption Day was released on the “Family Garden” CD by John McCutcheon in 1993. Three years later, the Happy Adoption Day book was published.
A song sheet with musical notes are found at the back of the book. However, even if you don't know how to play the piano, you and your child can still enjoy this wonderful read. Make up your own rhythm and pace as you go along!
Obviously, words are in important part of any book. However, illustrations can speak louder than words, especially when targeted to young children. Artist Julie Paschkis did an extraordinary job of conveying the happiness of adoption through her illustrations. The words and illustrations intertwine in a fun and solid message for families everywhere.
Happy Adoption Day was a delight to read (and sing). It's an amazing book for children and families whose lives have been touched through adoption.
Both the Happy Adoption Day book and Family Garden CD are available through most major bookstores.
