Preparing Your Home For A Hurricane

Preparing Your Home For A Hurricane
Hurricane season will be here very soon. With that in mind, it's time to begin preparations if you live where the storms are possible. Doing everything possible to protect your home now, will allow the focus to be on the safety of your family when a storm is headed your way. It is important not to wait until the last minute to prepare.

Below is a list of items to check along with supplies to consider. It is much easier to purchase these items now while they are available rather than wait until a storm is on its way and supplies become scarce and unavailable.

1. Check items in your yard such as sheds, swing sets, boats and trailers. Are they secure and do you have the proper tie downs ready to be installed. Anything that is not secure should be removed and brought in when a hurricane is approaching.

2. Check tree limbs. Trim back any branches that are either touching your house or fence. Also trim any branches that could touch during heavy rains or wind. Contact the electric company for anything that is touching electric wires. Remove dead branches.

3. Measure doors and windows or purchase hurricane shutters. Purchase the wood and screws now, cut it to fit and mark each section for quick placement when needed.

4. Inspect gutters. Repair any damaged sections and make sure the downspout opening and surrounding area is clear. Keep gutters clean and ready throughout the season.

5. Roof turbines. If you have these, purchase the supplies necessary for removing them and sealing the hole.

6. Outdoor patio furniture and ornaments. Decide now where they will be stored. Clean out the chosen area and use it now for storing ice chests, generator, batteries and other items that you will need if you choose to ride out the storm.

If you don't know how to turn the water, power and gas off to your home, now is the time to educate yourself. Uncover the water meter now and keep it free of overgrown grass. If you decide to turn off the gas, find out ahead of time whether you can safely turn it back on or if you are required to call in a professional. Read the pamphlets that come with your electric and gas bills for information on how to turn these off or other ways to prepare for the storm. Whatever you do, prepare to be safe.
