Next in our study of rewriting vintage tatting patterns with modern tatting techniques is this large doily by Anne Orr. Center Ring 11 picots separated by 1 ds, 12th picot = mock picot to climb into first row. Row 1 Split ring 4 / 4 clr. RW CH 6 RW R 6 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 6 clr RW CH 6 RW *R 4 + (join to next free picot on center ring) 4 clr. RW CH 6 RW R 6 + (join to last picot of adjacent large ring)2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 6 clr RW CH 6 RW Repeat from * around. Last ring becomes a split ring. Split ring 6 + (join to last picot of adjacent large ring)2 - 2 - 2 / 6 + (join to initial large ring) 2 clr. Mock picot to climb into second row. Row 2 Split ring 4 / 4 clr. RW CH 6 RW R 4 + (join to free picot on large ring from row 1) 4 clr RW CH 6 *(cloverleaf) R 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - (this picot joins on repeats) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 clr. DNRW Leave no space R 2 + (join to last picot of previous ring) 2 - 2 - 2 - (this picot is + on repeats) 2 - 2 - 2 clr. RW CH 6 RW R 4 + (join to free picot on large ring from row 1) 4 clr RW CH 6 RW R 4 + (join to free picot on large ring from row 1) 4 clr RW CH 6 RW Repeat from * around. Last cloverleaf has split chain and split ring, thus: R 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 + (join to previous cloverleaf 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 clr. Wrap 6 ds onto the bare thread to create a split chain which returns the shuttle to the base of the cloverleaf. Tat remaining side ring join to cloverleaf motif opposite. Last ring of cloverleaf is a split ring. Split Ring 2 + 2 - 2 - 2 / 2 + 2 - 2 - 2 climb out with mock picot into third row. Last cloverleaf has split chain and split ring with mock picot to climb out thus: Complete ring 1 and 2 of the cloverleaf, attach sh2 to the base of the initial ring of row 4. Wrap 6 - 6 + (join to chain opposite) 6 onto the bare thread to create a split chain which returns the shuttle to the base of the cloverleaf. Tat remaining side ring as split ring. Row 6
*R 6 + (join to the pair of small rings of row 5) 6 RW
CH 6 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 6 + (join to middle picot of chain of row 5)
CH 6 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 6 + (join to middle picot of chain of row 5) 6 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 6 RW
*Repeat from * around. End off.
NB: Although tatters strive today to work from center outward or from row to row without unnecessary cutting of the thread, common sense dictated that the last row here be attached separately. Remember that vintage patterns are notorious for errors. I welcome any corrections.
