Long known for its health benefits, as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, disinfectant, sedative and tonic, Sandalwood essential oil is one of the foundation oils when it comes to perfumery. Sandalwood is used in natural perfumery as a harmonizing agent, base note or fixative. Sometimes all three.

It helps in bringing other oils together and adds a natural yet graceful aroma without overpowering the other oils. As a base not, it help to hold the scent of lighter oils that tend to dissipate quickly when used in a perfume blend. In India, natural perfumes known as attars are made by distilling essential oils of rare or difficult plants into a pure Sandalwood oil base. The Sandalwood oil makes it possible to produce natural perfumes that contain the essence of the plants and Sandalwood oil combined making it an almost magical blend.

Here are a few recipes using Sandalwood essential oil for perfume blends:

The Protector

You’ll need:

4 drops sandalwood essential oil
4 drops myrrh essential oil
3 drops frankincense essential oil
2 teaspoons jojoba oil

Place all ingredients in a bowl or pitcher and stir well. When thoroughly blended, place in your chosen bottle.

A Hint of Citrus

You will need:

2 cups distilled water
3 tablespoons vodka
5 drops sandalwood essential oil
10 drops bergamot essential oil
10 drops cassis essential oil

Place all ingredients in a bowl or pitcher and stir well. When thoroughly blended, place in your chosen bottle.

Floral Essence

You will need:

2 cups distilled water
3 tablespoons vodka
5 drops everlasting essential oil
10 drops peony essential oil
10 drops sandalwood fessential oil

Place all ingredients in a bowl or pitcher and stir well. When thoroughly blended, place in your chosen bottle.

Your Turn

Here’s a chance for you to get a little creative. It calls for your favorite essential oil. If you don’t have one, you could experiment, or wait until you find one that you feel will go with this creation.

You’ll need:

½ cup distilled water
¼ cup vodka
15 drops of your favorite essential oil
4 drops sandalwood essential oil

Place all ingredients in a bowl or pitcher and stir well. When thoroughly blended, place in your chosen bottle.
