April's Shower

Written and directed by Trish Doolan, this film begins with a look at a group of very diverse people who have come together for the wedding shower of a woman named April (Maria Cina). Behind the scenes, April's best friend Alex, who is also the maid of honor, is working hard to get everything into place. Stressed, frustrated, and a bit jealous, Alex finally reveals to everyone that she and April are more than good friends and former roommates; they also used to be lovers.
April was actually very much in love with Alex, and they were together for more than 5 years. Despite being in a loving relationship, April ignored her misgivings and finally caved in to the constant pressure from her mother and started dating Pauly (Randall Batinkoff), who is now the man she's engaged to.
Trish Doolan, who also costars as Alex, directed the entire film in just one location, the beautiful house the shower is held in. Depsite having an extremely limited budget and meeting some resistance - Doolan says that "months were spent on our knees begging Hollywood for a deal" - the movie was made and is a fairly decent story.
Of course the film has a few kinks. April's friends are sometimes a bit too wacky to be believable, and the movie's pace sometimes leaves one breathless, but the good qualities far outweigh the bad. Doolan's hard work is evident in the detailed plot and the careful treatment of her characters feelings. I can't wait to see what she'll do with an enormous budget and a writing team.
"April's Shower" won the Best Lesbian Feature award at both the Philadelphia Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and Phoenix Out FAR.
