Living With Confidence
David Jeremiah is the senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church located in El Cajon, California. Due to foreclosures and unemployment, a recent news report listed El Cajon as the community with the worst financial health in the nation. Tasked with shepherding a flock of hurting people, Jeremiah is no stranger to the troubles experienced by people suffering from depression and fear.
I know several people who enjoy David Jeremiah’s radio and television shows. Being vaguely familiar with Turning Point on the radio, but not having seen any of his television sermons, I contemplated reading What In The World Is Going On. Before I knew it, the sequel was published and I jumped at the chance to review it.
Living With Confidence In A Chaotic World is far from a theological masterpiece. It won’t make you think deep thoughts or lie awake at night. Neither is it the type of extremely engaging book that will prevent you from putting it down. What it does do is offer simple solutions to living your life in troubling times.
Broken down into ten chapters, each presents a situational example and then provides suggestions for reacting biblically. Jeremiah provides scriptural references and ample examples throughout each chapter that support the chapter topic.
Because of its simplicity, the book has garnered criticism from those who were hoping for a thought-provoking book or a more in-depth scriptural study. I am reminded of a conversation that I had with a friend who is a pastor at a mega-church in Texas. It is often difficult to provide enough meat for the older children while still supplying milk to the babies. Living With Confidence In A Chaotic World is still a worthwhile read to those with a deeper understanding of scripture, but it is most aptly geared to the newer, struggling Christian.
