Eyebrows and eyelashes are as much a part of a fashionable look as your favorite hairstyle. These short strands of hair define the eyes and give shape and character to the face. Thin, misshaped or brows that are too short require makeup to create an attractive line. This week I want to discuss another remedy for insufficient eyebrows and eyelashes.

Most of us can imagine and sympathize with balding. But what happens when there is an absence of facial hair? Can you imagine a completely hair-less face as in the case of Alopecia Universalis? This would mean the lack of eyebrows and eyelashes. Their loss is as devastating as the scalp hair loss, and cannot be camouflaged or covered by a wig or hat. Eyebrows can be penciled on, eyeliner can be applied, but these are washed and rubbed off easily. Application is tedious and takes an artistic touch to create a natural look time after time.

I found an interesting remedy in a process called Permanent Makeup.
In an interview with Lillian Wollman, Permanent Makeup specialist of Expectations Salon in Fort Wayne, Indiana, I learned that Permanent Makeup, also called Micropigmentation and Cosmetic Tattooing, is the answer to having to redefine the eyes everyday. It stays on through bathing, swimming and sports. A makeup artist or esthetician that has knowledge of color, balance and face shape best applies cosmetic tattooing. The makeup artist can create the most natural appearing eyebrows and eyeliner.
For brows that are misshapen, Lillian removes the unwanted hair with tweezers or wax and applies the permanent cosmetic in an artful and attractive shape.


Safety and sanitation are important concerns. Check out the wall for licenses and certificates. Look for a certified permanent makeup artist. An esthetician is also required to follow sanitation laws, as is the licensed tattoo artist.
A patch test is required twenty-four hours before the application in order to detect any possibility of allergic reaction. Iron oxide dyes are placed just beneath the skin but do not penetrate the blood stream. A topical anesthetic is applied to dull the slight pain involved.

Just think of waking up in the morning with perfect brows and eyeliner!
