Born on January 17, 1980, Zooey Deschanel is an American-born actress, musician and singer-songwriter with a vintage, eclectic sound and image. Now living in Los Angeles, CA, her household acting name is currently emerging her alternative music side and helping to bring her songs into the spotlight through the successful indie duo She & Him.

Starting her acting career in 1998, Deschanel has made great success for herself as an actress in both films and television series. Throughout the years of acting, Zooey has managed to be able to actually sing in a lot of her acting roles. The songs and performances have helped her gain experience and draw attention to the actress’s musical side.

Zooey Deschanel started her singing career in high school, which led her to pursue a career in musical theatre. She made the decision to attend the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts for her acting/musical theatre education. In 2001, she decided to begin seriously dabbling in the musical side of the artistic industry and began performing in the Los Angeles jazz cabaret act If All the Stars Were Pretty Babies with fellow actress Samantha Shelton. Apart from singing, Zooey also plays the ukulele, banjo, keyboard and percussions.

Solo artist M. Ward teamed up with Deschanel for an eclectic musical collaboration they call She & Him, and on March 18, 2008 they released their debut album through Merge Records titled Volume One. The duo has a vintage-inspired alternative American indie sound. Deschanel plays the ukulele, piano and provides vocals, and Ward plays the guitar and focuses on the overall production of the musical creations. Their music and songs have been said to have an alternative country and indie folk sound. The duo released their second album, titled Volume Two on March 23, 2010. That spring, they went on to tour in the USA and Europe to promote the album through multiple music festivals. They headlined with Broken Social Scene, Jeff Tweedy and Built to Spill. She & Him also recently recorded a Christmas album. Released by Merge Records on October 25, 2011, this 12-track album is titled A Very She & Him Christmas.
