It’s that time again. This month plays host to two major industry awards shows: The 63rd annual Golden Globe Awards and the 12th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. This year’s hosts for the Golden Globes include Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Jamie Foxx, Natalie Portman, Emma Thompson, Jessica Alba, Emmy Rossum, John Travolta and Denzel Washington.
Nominees for the Golden Globes include the most popular TV series and actors. Drama TV favorites include newcomers: The Closer, and Commander in Chief, alongside returning favorites: The Shield, Lost, and 24. HBO and ABC lead the awards with 17 and 16 nominations, respectively.
ABC dominates the ‘Best Drama Series’ category with nominations for Commander in Chief, Grey’s Anatomy, and Lost. Other nominees for best drama series include Prison Break (FOX), and Rome (HBO).
FOX dominates the ‘Best Actor in a Drama Series’ category, with Hugh Laurie, for House; Wentworth Miller, Prison Break; and Kiefer Sutherland, 24. ABC follows a close second with Patrick Dempsey, Grey’s Anatomy; and Matthew Fox, Lost.
‘Best Actress in a Drama Series’ draws talented actresses from a range of networks. Receiving nominations for their work are Patricia Arquette, Medium (NBC); Glenn Close, The Shield (FX); Geena Davis, Commander in Chief (ABC); Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer (TNT); and Polly Walker, Rome (HBO).
Yet another nomination for Lost arises in the ‘Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries, or TV Movie’ category. First-time Lost nominee Naveen Andrews is up against reputed actor Donald Sutherland, Commander in Chief.
-Other nominees include Paul Newman, Empire Falls (HBO), Randy Quaid, Elvis (CBS), and Jeremy Piven for the lone comedy series in the category, Entourage (HBO).
The ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries, or TV Movie’ category includes numerous veteran actresses. Sandra Oh holds the only drama series nomination in the category with her nod for Grey’s Anatomy.
-Other nominees include Camryn Manheim for her role in Elvis; Joanne Woodward, wife of Paul Newman, for Empire Falls; and Elizabeth Perkins and Candice Bergen for their roles in the dark comedies Weeds (Showtime) and Boston Legal (ABC), respectively.
The ‘Best Miniseries or TV Movie’ nominees include Empire Falls, Into the West (TNT), Lackawanna Blues (HBO), Sleeper Cell (Showtime), Viva Blackpool (BBC America), and Warm Springs (HBO).
Kenneth Branagh is nominated for Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie for Warm Springs, along with Ed Harris, for Empire Falls; Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Elvis; Bill Nighy, The Girl in the Café (HBO); and Donald Sutherland, Human Trafficking (Lifetime).
‘Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie’ nominees include Halle Berry, Their Eyes Were Watching God (ABC); Kelly MacDonald, The Girl in the Café; S. Epatha Merkerson, Lackawanna Blues; Cynthia Nixon, Warm Springs; and Mira Sorvino, Human Trafficking.
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards are the only awards for actors chosen by actors. This year, the randomly selected peers chose the following nominees:
Receiving nods for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series’ are Alan Alda, The West Wing (NBC); Patrick Dempsey, Grey's Anatomy; Hugh Laurie, House; Ian McShane, Deadwood (HBO); and Kiefer Sutherland, 24.
‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series’ nominees include Patricia Arquette, Medium (NBC); Geena Davis, Commander in Chief; Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC); Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy, and Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer.
HBO also dominates the SAG award nominations in the following two categories: ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries’ with Kenneth Branagh, Warm Springs; Ed Harris, Empire Falls; and Paul Newman, Empire Falls; and ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries’ with S. Epatha Merkerson, Lackawanna Blues; Cynthia Nixon, Warm Springs; Joanne Woodward, Empire Falls, and Robin Wright Penn, Empire Falls.
-Also nominated are Ted Danson, Knights of the South Bronx (A&E); Christopher Plummer, Our Fathers (Showtime); and Tonantzin Carmelo, Into the West (TNT).
Finally, ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series’ nominees include The Closer, Grey's Anatomy, Lost, The West Wing, and Six Feet Under (HBO).

The 63rd Annual Golden Globes will be telecast live on January 16, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. EST, on NBC. The awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
The 12th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on Sunday, Jan. 29, on TNT and TBS at 8 PM ET/PT, 7 PM CT, 6 PM MT. The awards will take place at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
