Choose the Right Spa for YouWith so many places advertising 'spa' services, it can be discouraging to find that the spa experience turns out to be a massage table at the back of a tattoo parlor! No, I'm not being facetious. The word 'spa' still creeps into obscure places to denote 'relaxation' and 'pampering' though thankfully, these misnomers are quickly becoming history. Because the wide choice of bona fide spas can be somewhat confusing, here are some considerations to help you choose the right spa experience for you. First, decide what you want -- a relaxation moment, a romantic time, a maternity treat, or a full body tune-up with facial, body, and beauty services such as pedicures, manicures and hair-styling. Any day spa will fit the bill. As a rule of thumb, a 60-minute facial or massage averages around $125-$175. A manicure averages $50. If you're wanting to go with a gaggle of girlfriends, some spas will create a rotation of special services so that small groups can pedicure together, steam and soak in conversational groups, and they'll even organize for refreshing spritzers (to drink, not to spray) along with nibblies. Spa parties need space and some services, such as catering. Look to hotel spa destinations as your best bet. If you're looking for a special romantic moment with your honey, hotel and high-end day spas should top your research list. Couple's massage is now so popular that most spas have packages for two, designed to nurture relationships through togetherness time. Since virtually all spas cater to men these days, don't forget that gift certificates make for a very loving and thoughtful present. If you're feeling like something more involved, and have the money and time, turn your spa experience into a weekend getaway or week-long retreat. Spa and destination resorts are geared to enveloping you with a style of pampering, stress-release services that will relax you to the core. And they're especially fun to enjoy with freinds and family. Destination spas range from about $450 a day to $4,500-$7,500 a week. Depending on the time of year you select, find out what other activities your chosen resort might offer. Eco-spaaing is increasingly popular as in hike, horseback ride or exploring cultural sights in the morning; spa in the afternoon. Looking for something more? Check out spas that specialize in weight loss, smoking cessation, yoga, cooking, and sports rehabilitation. These days, there is truly something or everyone. With a basic decision made, look through my spa articles to see if any of them fit your needs; and/or check out International Spa Association (www.experienceispa.com) for a spa locale in your area. | Related Articles | Editor's Picks Articles | Top Ten Articles | Previous Features | Site Map
