Review of Not This Time
Sometimes, picking up the sequel to a book is like visiting with old friends. You are so very happy to be able to see them again and to be able to catch up on their lives. I am on Pinterest...a social site that enables you to create visual boards of information, recipes, favorite things, news, etcetera. I have seen several pins (what each visual piece is called) lately to which I can relate. In a fun, comical manner, they discuss the magic of getting to know a book's characters as if they were real people. That makes for a good book and, ultimately, a good series.
Where am I going with all of this? This week's review of Vicki Hinze's novel, Not This Time is a continuation of the Crossroads Crisis Center Series. I was first introduced to Hinze when I reviewed book two in the series, Deadly Ties. Luckily, the publisher offered to let me see a copy of the third book, Not This Time as well. Hinze's expressive writing style quickly captures the reader's attention and vividly paints action scenes that can easily be imagined. Her characters are likable, the romantic scenes are never over the top, and she offers up lessons on faith, love, hope and other topics in Christian living.
A hallmark of a well written series is the ease with which a subsequent book can be read without having read the prior book. While Hinze alludes to events in prior books, both Not This Time and the previous novel, Deadly Ties, are able to enthrall the reader and stand alone.
Picking up where Deadly Ties ended, Not This Time begins with the wedding of Harvey and Roxy. Unfortunately, NINA, a terrorist organization, has reared its ugly head again. Spoiling the wedding is only the beginning. NINA threatens to destroy Seagrove Villlage and tear the lives of its residents apart. While the extreme head of NINA is never revealed, the unveiling of the identities of its major players is a twist you will never see coming.
