| The Scrambled States of America by Laurie Keller It takes an obsessive brand of wackiness to bring off a picture book whose protagonists are the fifty states of America. In this first picture book by Laurie Keller, she manages to succeed in making her young audience acquire a pretty good idea of where each state is. She even gets the young reader to watch with suspense the budding romance between Mississippi and Nevada. | |

The fourth of July is the biggest and the best summer holiday and one of my favorites. Family tradition reigns. You might go to the same house for a barbecue and fireworks year after year or perhaps you spend it at the beach, an area festival or in a park. For me, every year for the past 14 years has been spent at my sister-in-law's house with my husband's family. Things have changed over the years -- my sister-in-law and brother-in-law built a new house, close family and friends have passed on and two little boys entered our lives. One thing that hasn't changed though is my sister-in-law's menu. Actually, it's my brother-in-law that does the cooking, but every year we look forward to those tender ribs and my mother-in-law's sweet desserts.
