The Domino Decorating Book
If you want to help a newlywed, a college student or a young adult find fun, stylish ideas for decorating on a budget and learning the basics about how to match up furniture and fabrics for an overall great look, then check out Domino: The Book of Decorating: A room-by-room guide to creating a home that makes you happy because it really is such a happy book.
The color schemes, clean styles and easy to use guides in this book are fantastic. They've got a shopping guide that explains different kinds of furniture and helps you learn how to mix and match to put them together.
One of the Amazon reviewers said that the book was geared toward 20 year olds, and that doesn't surprise me, there's not much mention of solutions for families with kids and a lot of the suggestions are super-cool for apartments and small spaces.
This book is not one that will sit upon the shelf, it's very usable. Call me a dork, but I would even take it shopping for suggestions. If you're a fan of Domino magazine, you know how good they are at coming up with really usable ideas and making things really easy to adapt. Apparently that's all part of the domino effect.
Another reviewer lamented that the book doesn't address closets, like the magazine does. Closets are a big issue for many decorators, so if you're looking for closet ideas, you won't find them here.
That's OK, in my house a clean closet means room to shop and that is not always a budget friendly activity! If you've got a young adult on your shopping list, or a newlywed couple that needs a little decorating help, this book is a fantastic introduction to the domino decorating philosophy.
