Frozen Coffee Treats
Summer is well underway and I can’t tell you how many times this year I’ve heard, “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!” I know I’m in the minority here, but this happens to be my favorite time of year and I will take 100 days of heat along with the humidity as opposed to one cold day in winter. But here’s something I am sure we can both agree on. If you are looking for relief, what could be more fun than eating your favorite frozen treats?
As kids we looked forward to the arrival of the ice cream man or a trip to our neighborhood store that carried our favorite cool treats. Of course these days with our many dietary constraints, both self-imposed and medically mandated, we have to search high and low for treats that both tickle our palate and make the grade health-wise.
If you are a coffee lover like me, I’ve got a few that you may find a nice change, a more grown up version from the sticky sweet pops we ate as kids. I know I had a great time this weekend trying a few.
Trader Joe’s Java Floe Mocha Fudge Frozen Bars
Calorie Content: 140
Fat Content: 1.5 grams
Bars per container: 4
Taste Results: A definite mocha (coffee/chocolate) flavor. Icy consistency, not too sweet.
Starbucks Frappuccino Low Fat Ice Cream Bars-Mocha Flavor
These bars come in four flavors. Mocha, Java Fudge and Caffe Vanilla.
Calorie Content: 120
Fat Content: 1 gram
Bars per container: 6
Taste Results: Creamier and just a tad sweeter than the Trader Joe’s, good flavor.
Häagen-Dazs Coffee Almond Crunch
Calorie Content: 310
Bars per container: 3
Fat Content: 22g
Taste Results: Rich and creamy, good chocolate, good coffee flavor, a typical Häagen-Dazs concoction. Okay, clearly this one is not a dietary dream and could be a dietary disaster, but it certainly tastes good.
I would have to say my favorite of the bunch was the Starbucks Frappuccino Low Fat Ice Cream Bars-Mocha Flavor. It tastes great and the fat and calorie content are very good.
If you are looking for sugar-free versions, most of the brands offer these as well.
So when the mercury is high run to your favorite air-conditioned supermarket, spend some time in the frozen food aisle and pick up a few of your frozen coffee favorites.
