Chord Progressions - 1st Cut is ...

Guest Author - David Ø

In this little series we're having a look at some popular chord progressions which are used over and over (and over) again in many popular tunes and songs. If you missed out and would like to start from the beginning here's a handy link to follow. Popular Chord Progressions #1

This week we're looking at an old favorite from the family of G. The 3 main chords in this family are G, C and D. This little chord-trio has been used in countless tunes too numerous to mention. Ok we can name one or two examples I'm sure. What about "First Cut is the Deepest" written and performed by super musician Cat Stevens. This song was also covered by many others including a number 1 for Rod Stewart in C , the original P.P.Arnold back in the 60s in E, and there was also a great version done by Sheryl Crowe in D. Anyone know any others? Let's all know on the forums.

And the original chords used for this little classic?

First Cut is the Deepest

G : C : D :

I would have given you all of my heart
But there's someone else who's torn it apart
And she's taking almost all that I've got
But if you want, I'll try to love again
Baby I'll try to love again but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
'Cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
When it comes to lovin' me she's worse

I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
Cause I'm sure gonna give you a try
And if you want, I'll try to love again
Baby, I'll try to love again, but I know

The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
'Cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
When it comes to lovin' me she's worse

Yes that's all there is to it folks - ok the order of the chords is changed around on the verses and chorus', but it's nothing too hectic to follow. Have a listen to the record and you'll hear what I mean. Don't forget that you can always change the key to suit your voice on any song!

If you would like to learn all of the chord families, you might be interested in following this link and checking out details of my e-book Basic Chord Families shown over there to the right - it's sub-title? Play 1000s of Songs With These Chords ... and that's true! More classics have been written with these families than you can shake a stick at! (That's musician technical speak that is :).
