Bob’s Birthday – Book Review

Bob’s Birthday – Book Review
Wendy has a great idea for a surprise on Bob’s birthday. “Let’s just pretend it’s just an ordinary day and surprise him with a party tonight!”

Bob’s Birthday by Diane Redmond

It’s a bit awkward when Bob asks if any mail has come for him today. Wendy asks him if he was expecting something special. Then Bob and Scoop and Lofty leave to go fix Farmer Pickles’s barn. That leaves the coast clear for Wendy to bake him a cake.

When they all arrive to fix the barn they discover that Travis and Spud are already there. Bob starts to pull off the old planking and when it comes loose unexpectedly he lands on his bottom. On No! Things are not going well for Bob on his birthday.

Back at the yard as Wendy is making the cake Dizzy and Muck watch through the window. It’s just like making concrete- you just throw everything in and mix it together. They decide they want to make a concrete cake that Bob can keep forever. Dizzy makes her best concrete and they pour it into a tire mold. They decorate it with flowers, feathers and leaves.

Back at the barn Bob and Lofty are working hard, but they realize that Travis and Spud are supposed to be delivering eggs for Farmer Pickle. Spud catches a ride home with them and in the house when he sees the cake he scoops some icing off and plops it right into his mouth.

Throughout the day Bob misses all the expected mentions of his birthday and really feels bad so it is a beautiful surprise when he does return home to a decorated table, presents and a cake. He even gets a concrete cake he can keep forever!

Note: All Bob the Builder books are from my personal library.

Bob the Builder is a British animated children’s TV show. In the original series Bob is a building contractor and along with his colleague Wendy and other neighbors and friends and their work vehicles and equipment fix things. In every episode Bob and his group renovate, construct and repair things. Any project that needs to be done can be done by Bob and his team.
Bob’s catchphrase is “Can we fix it?” and with the conflict resolution, cooperation and socialization taught in each episode we discover that “Yes they can!”
