This is a great picture book to expand your toddler’s world. It is an introduction to the animals on our planet. At the book’s end, Eric Carle presents the names of the animal baby, mother and father. For example, in the lion family, there are a cub, lioness and lion. And, a group of lions are a pride.
Does a Kangaroo Have a Mother, Too? ends sweetly. The closing line is “Animal mothers love their babies just as yours love you.”
An outing to the zoo, is a nice follow-up to reading the board book. Take the book and compare the pictures to the actual animals.
Eric Carle does the illustrations as well as the prose. As always, he uses earth colors with broad brush strokes. The paint is applied thickly adding texture.
