A visit to the heritage Central Market takes one away from the glitzy malls we have become accustomed to across the world. Built in 1888, Central Market is located along Jalan Hang Kasturi, a few minutes away from Petaling Street, and was originally an open air wet market. It has since been classified as a Heritage Site by the Malaysian Heritage Society and it is now a landmark for Malaysian culture and heritage.

We were stunned with the beauty of the Moorish looking Supreme Court in KL,also called the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, painted in gorgeous salmon colours. Its perfectly ticking clock tower (40m) has witnessed many historical milestones and today benevolently oversees a host of important national events, like the annual National Day Parade. Opposite the building is the Merdeka Square, where on a tall flag pole a huge Malaysian flag flaps in the wind.

And if you are into history, visit the Masjid Jamek which is situated, where both rivers the Sungei Klang and the Sungei Gombak meet. Apparently this is where Kuala Lumpur began and the mosque was built in 1907 and officially opened by the Sultan of Selangor 1909. This is where the earliest settlers In the 1850s, who were miners, built their shacks, and unload here their equipment and provisions. They would then trek up the jungle path to Ampang, where they would prospect for tin.

For shopaholics, Chinatown’s Petaling Street is a bargain hunter’s paradise. Go with empty suitcases to Malaysia and stock up there!Plus it’s great fun shopping at night, when the whole area transforms into a lively and vibrant night market after dark, with hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of stuff at dirt-cheap prices. It is the most happening night market in the city. Do try the street food here, it’s to die for!
