Dream Symbols - Abandonment
It is said that our earliest memories hold the key to our personalities and adult issues. One of my earliest memories is a recurring dream where my parents were driving off and leaving me with a relative. They had a nice car, fancy clothes (in reality, they had neither) and were waving and smiling. I was around five or six years old and stood there sobbing. Experience in therapy and my work in earning my Master in Social Work revealed that my dysfunctional father probably frequently expressed a desire to be free of the financial responsibilities of children. My childhood was filled with horrifying abuse and I've worked hard to resolve abandonment issues in adulthood.
Dreams of abandonment may indicate unconscious fear of being forsaken by a spouse, lover, friends or even your spiritual source of support. Are you feeling unsupported or misunderstood? Perhaps it would help to express these feelings. Do you feel secure in your relationship? If you feel that you and your partner are growing apart, you may want to take steps to repair communication and spend quality time together. In our busy lives, the most important people in our lives are frequently neglected.
The cycle of grief includes a wide range of emotions and many who have lost a loved one report dreams of abandonment. Anger, resentment, panic and fear are a large part of this cycle. You may also be feeling that your spiritual foundation is shaken. These emotions are part of the healing process and the unconcious' method of assisting with healing. If you experience dreams of abandonment on a recurring basis, you may be harboring feelings of fear and resentment from childhood or a current relationship. Talking with a trusted friend may help. If these issues are affecting your current relationships, you may need to seek professional help.
Abandoning something in a dream can be a positive symbol, especially if it is something that no longer serves you. You may be taking some exciting positive steps toward change.
May all your dreams come true!
