Is Paris Hilton Too Hot For TV?

Guest Author - Michelle Snow

Paris Hilton ad is too hot according to some [photo: Carls Jr.]Many have said the heiress has done some extremely outrageous things on television. But it's an ad for the fast food chain Carl's Jr (also known in some states as Hardees) that has tv watchdog groups up in arms over its blatant sexual overtones.

In the ad, a scantily clad Hilton washes a black Bentley (wait, Paris doing manual labor?? Must have been a good paycheck) with a sponge and a fire hose, getting herself as wet and sudsy as the vehicle. In the background, a sultry version of Cole Porter's "I Love Paris" plays as Hilton crawls on the floor and takes a bite out of the new Spicy BBQ Burger. The screen fades to Hilton's infamous mantra: "That's Hot."

But it's the ad that the Parents Television Council is finding hot...too hot, in fact. It plans to mobilise its more than 1 million members to protest and is planning to petition the FCC to allow fines for "indecent" television ads.

"This commercial is basically soft-core porn," said Melissa Caldwell, research director for the group, who goes on to add, "It's inappropriate for television."

Though Carl's Jr spokesperson Brad Haley was unavailable for personal comment, he said through the company's website, "Great looking actress, great looking car, great looking burger...that's pretty much the idea."

The company has even set up a separate website for the ad campaign at spicyparis.com so people can judge for themselves.

Having seen the ad, I can say that while it doesn't appear any worse than a lot of other "sex sells" type of ads I've seen recently, the sight of Paris spread eagle on a Bentley doesn't make me want to rush out and buy a burger, either.

What do you think? Should the ad be labeled as too hot for tv, or is it much ado about nothing? Talk about it on the message boards.
