Callings in the LDS Church: Part 2, The Laws of Creation?
By guest author: P.D. Wiles.
In the last article, we discussed receiving the call to serve as an auxiliary president. We ended by comparing the task ahead to “creating” a world where the members can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost.
If we consider the steps by which our world was created, we can follow a similar blueprint for our presidencies. The best place to start, of course, is in the scriptures. As you read the steps below, and the accompanying references, think about what you know about the Creation. You might even want to review the scriptural accounts. You will see how the task was accomplished. Since we know that God performs tasks “in wisdom and in order,” it makes sense to follow His example.
Define Your Purpose
Moses 1:36-39: “And it came to pass that Moses spake unto the Lord, saying: Be merciful unto thy servant, O God, and tell me concerning this earth, and the inhabitants thereof, and also the heavens, and then thy servant shall be content.
And the Lord God spake unto Moses, saying: The heavens, they are many, and they cannot be numbered unto man; but they are numbered unto me, for they are mine.
And as one earth shall pass away, and the heavens thereof even so shall another come; and there is no end to my works, neither to my words.
For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”
Work Together As One
3 Nephi 19:19-23: “And it came to pass that Jesus departed out of the midst of them, and went a little way off from them and bowed himself to the earth, and he said:
Father, I thank thee that thou hast given the Holy Ghost unto these whom I have chose; and it is because of their belief in me that I have chosen them out of the world.
Father, I pray thee that thou wilt give the Holy Ghost unto all them that shall believe in their words.
Father, thou hast given them the Holy Ghost because they believe in me; and thou seest that they believe in me because thou hearest them, and they pray unto me because I am with them.
And now Father, I pray unto thee for them, and also for all those who shall believe on their words, that they may believe in me, that I may be in them as thou, Father, art in me, that we may be one.”
Organize Materials and Follow Through
Harold B. Lee: “Under the Father’s instruction and by Jehovah’s direction, the earth and all pertaining thereto was organized and formed. They ‘ordered,’ they ‘watched over,’ and ‘prepared’ the earth. They took ‘counsel among themselves’ as to the bringing of all manner of life to the earth and all things, including man, and prepared it for the carrying out of the plan, which we could well liken to a blueprint, by which the children of God could be tutored and trained in all that was necessary for the divine purpose of bringing to pass, ‘to the glory of God,’ the opportunity of every soul to gain ‘immortality and eternal life.'”
Return and Report
Moses 2:31: “And I, God, saw everything that I had made, and, behold, all things which I had made were very good…
Thus the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.”
A Time To Rest
Moses 2:2: “And on the seventh day I, God, ended my work, and all things which I had made; and I rested on the seventh day from all my work, and all things which I had made were finished, and I, God, saw that they were good.”
Remember, you have been called, in the words of Samuel, because “the Lord looketh upon the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7) The Lord has looked upon your heart, and found you a worthy and faithful woman. He knows you will do your best.
