Snowflakes in Split Ring Tatting K Bovard
Karen Bovard's Snowflakes in Split Ring Tatting
2017
I have always enjoyed split ring tatting. I remember so well how impressed I was with that well-known book by Mary Sue Kuhn, "The Joy of Split Ring Tatting." The split ring technique is not only a decorative element, it has also become a basic construction tool for tatting designs.
There are many designs which use the split ring technique even among my own simple designs. Remember the split ring heart? https://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art10434.asp And, did you ever work the "Holly's Heart" pattern from the files of the Online Tatting Class? So, perhaps we have learned all we need to know about the split ring?
Hmm? Well, no.
Karen Bovard's new book "Snowflakes in Split Ring Tatting" 2017 is both an eye-opener and a page-turner! The book is paperbound, 8.5" x 11", with full-color photos and diagrams. This 49-page book presents 54 snowflake designs. And these snowflakes are physically correct 6-point snowflakes, too!
Although the designs are delightful, it is the set of three instructional pages which will make this book a classic in years to come.
Karen has presented in text and color-coded diagrams the most essential explanation of the use of the split ring ever. The tutorial begins with the difference between a ring and a split ring. She has created a set of markings that indicate the start and stop of the split ring, the direction in which it is to be tatted, along with the number of ds for each segment of the split ring. (It should be noted that all rings in the books are based on 18 double stitches.)
Karen Bovard teaches us also how to throw off a ring from the "wrapped" side of the split ring. There are no purely decorative picots. All picots are used for construction purposes and are thus very small making a tight join.
