The Ugly Truth – Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl
This is a simple but honest approach to men and women. Before you say “oh come on” listen to my reasons. If you can get past the language and crude humor and really pay attention to the underlying message, it is not only about our sexual differences, it is about heartbreak.
This is a story about a man, Mike Chadway, played by Gerard Butler who has had his heart broken too many times to still believe in love. So, instead of trying to figure out the underlying cause he attacks and exaggerates the differences between men and women and what they want out of a relationship. What Mike is not counting on is meeting Abby Richter, played by Katherine Heigl, his soon to be boss and producer, and truly liking her.
Mike has a second rate show called The Ugly Truth, where he egregiously describes what men want from women. Finding herself in a slump because of her own shows’ poor ratings she finds herself watching Mike’s show in a lonely attempt to find ideas for her own. While watching Mike on live TV she finds herself calling in and describing Mr. Right, only to be criticized by Mike that no such man exists.
Returning to work the following day Abby finds that her boss not only likes Mike but has in fact hired him to bring his viewers back to Abby’s show. Very quickly the set becomes tense leading to an actual bet between Abby and Mike with the question, is their a Mr. Right out there?
If you want to see what happens next the movie is now out on DVD. Here are the mistakes I found.
When Abby’s boss is about to introduce Mike to her they are in his office. If you look behind Mike the picture frames change between shots.
When Mike and Abby are in the elevator Abby is seen carrying her shoes. When she gets to her room she sits down and starts to take off her shoes again.
When Abby is talking to Mike in her office she calls Colin, shortly putting him on hold. If you watch the phone light it is blinking green. As the scene goes back and forth from Abby to Mike that same blinking light changes from green to red.
Most people would probably find this movie a little over the top with this kind of humor. I enjoyed watching Abby and Mike battle each other over who is right about the opposite sex. If you like either actor I encourage you to give it a try.
