The ninth installment of the Ellie Avery Mystery Series, Marriage, Monsters-in-Law and Murder, by Sara Rosett, is a fun, light-hearted cozy mystery. In addition to being a guest at the wedding of her sister-in-law, Summer, Ellie Avery agrees to help coordinate the last minute details and changes, since the wedding has been moved to the exclusive Camden Island Resort, and will be a 4-day event. Ellie, who runs an organizing (closets, etc.) business, is perfect for the job, and thinks that if this works out, she can add wedding planning to her list of services. Since most of the details of the wedding have already been taken care of, Ellie’s biggest challenge will be to keep the groom, Brian’s, mother Yvonne and stepmother Patricia, away from each other.
Brian’s cousin, Graham, is his best man, and brings Brian’s ex-girlfriend, Julia, as his date. When Summer is hit with paintball pellets and wears a shirt from a welcome basket that has been rubbed with poison ivy, Julia is blamed for trying to sabotage the wedding. Transportation around the resort is mostly by golf cart, and there is a special cart designated for the bride and groom. When the photographer takes it to get some batteries for his camera, the wheel falls off and he is killed. Ellie becomes suspicious that someone is trying to kill the bride.
Even though this novel is lighthearted, the suspense builds as the list of suspects grows. What started as pranks has escalated into murder, and the bride and those who are around her are endangered. Rosett has created characters that seem like people we can relate to – our friends, neighbors, relatives. Her style of writing is easy to follow, and the scenarios seem plausible. Of course, the ending is packed with surprises, and the novel keeps the readers’ interest throughout.
If you are one who enjoys cozy mysteries that are quick and fun reads, Marriage, Monsters-in-Law and Murder is a book you will want to pick up.
