Every once in a while a cookbook comes around that seems to have everything. John Currence’s Big Bad Breakfast is one such book. Not only does it contain mouthwatering recipes, but it’s filled with stories to make the book suitable for an enjoyable read. Not only can John Currence cook, he can entertain.

The recipes are inspiring – I even ordered a country ham online so that I could make the Red-eye Gravy. It was fabulous over the Black Pepper Buttermilk Biscuits. I made the German Pancake, which consisted of apples in an eggy, puffy pancake that, since it was baked in a small cast-iron pan, turned out crisp and caramelized on the outside with a custardy interior; it was fabulous. I adapted the Garlic Cheese Grits to my slow cooker (who has time to stand at the stove and stir); they made a great breakfast with bacon and eggs, and later were perfect under a serving of spicy southern-style shrimp. Yum! The omelets and egg dishes in this cookbook are incredible.

The book is well-organized, has an excellent table of contents and index, and the pictures will insure that anyone who likes to eat will want to make almost every dish.

I must admit that this is my new favorite Breakfast cookbook (and I own dozens), and I doubt the novelty will wear off before I’ve made almost everything in the book. The recipes are easy to follow, with instructions that make sense. Several of the recipes are very quick and easy, so busy cooks and inexperienced cooks will have excellent results without having to invest too much time and effort. So far, my results have been picture-perfect.

If you love breakfast, and want to make something other than the same old-same-old, Big Bad Breakfast is definitely recommended.
