Star Trek Tribute Bangle Patricia Cobb
THEIR FIVE YEAR MISSION…
I am so glad to welcome a new tatter who is sharing her work today. Patricia Cobb and I both share a love of the original Star Trek® show whose plot lines dealt with the social issues of the day. Those issues are still relevant, so the mission continues...
A tatted tribute to the Original Star Trek® crew whose show originally ran from 1966-1969 by Patricia Lyn Cobb.
Needed: Size 3 thread—2 colors 2 Shuttles
Metal ring (2 ¾ inch diameter)— bangle bracelets such as those sold at Claire’s in packages of 25.
Notes: All Celtic Knot Picots (CKP) are made with a ½ inch picot gauge with the gauge held vertically. In the pattern, the ckp is noted as a "." , i.e., "Insert . on thread before starting." which means to create the ckp on the bare thread of the ring before wrapping .
Picot gauge held vertically
All joins in Round 2 and Round 3 are Catherine Wheel Joins, abbreviated (CWJ). The CWJ encapsulates two threads at the same time. It is created in the manner of making the split chain stitch or the tied double stitch. It is often used when making tatted coils or wheels, thence the Catherine Wheel.
Drop a loop of the SH2 thread behind the core thread which is positioned above the point of attachment (the thread in the space between two double stitches of the previous round. Bring thread up through the work into a loop and put the shuttle through that loop. Remove only a little slack. Next form a loop on the front side and bring it to the back and put the shuttle through. Pull gently on the half stitch closest to the last ds made and snug up. Repeat with the other half. The double stitch on this round covers both the core thread and the thread from the previous round.
How to determine to which leg of the CKP to join:
Count the legs clockwise, starting with the CKP’s origin—from the direction you are looking at the CKP—1/3, 2/3 and 3/3.
ROUND 1 --Wind one shuttle with 2 yards + 1 foot of thread
Ring 1: Insert 2 . on thread before starting: 5 (insert CKP) 6 – 6 (insert CKP) 5 Cl R..
Ring 2: Insert . on thread before starting. 5 + (3/3 last CKP of Ring 1) 6 – 6 (insert CKP) 5. Cl R.
Ring 3: 5 +(3/3 CKP of Ring 2) 6 – 6 +(2/3 first CKP Ring 1) 5 Cl R. Cut and Tie.
ROUND 2 --3 yards on Shuttle 1 & 1 yard + 1 foot on Shuttle 2 Tie threads together.
SR = split ring
*SR1—Use Shuttle 1: 3/3 Cl R.SS
CH1—Use Shuttle 2: 1 +(Join to CKP using Shuttle 1 to make CWJ) 1. SS
SR2—Use Shuttle 1: 3/3. Cl R. SS
CH2—Use Shuttle 2: 1 (Insert . with Shuttle 1) 1. SS
SR3—Use Shuttle 1: 3/3 Cl R. SS
CH3—Use Shuttle 2: 1 +(Join to corresponding picot on Ring from Previous Round using Shuttle 1 to make CWJ) 1. SS
SR4—Use Shuttle 1: 3/3. Cl R. SS
CH4—Use Shuttle 2: 1 (Insert . with Shuttle 1) 1**
Repeat from * to ** two more times, joining final CH to starting SR. Tie and Cut.
Round 3 -- Wind one shuttle with 3 ½ yards thread leaving a 6 inch tail as you start to cover ring.
8 +(Join to 2/3 CKP using CWJ) 3 +(Join to 3/3 same CKP using CWJ)
*16 +(Join to 2/3 CKP using CWJ) 3 +(Join to 3/3 CKP using CWJ)**.
Repeat from * to ** four more times.
Add an additional 8 ds and leave a 6 inch tail and cut. Tie knot an inch below cut edges for hanger.
